Pro-Tip: removing odor

Ew… THAT STINKS! : Removing Persistent Stains and Odors from Homes

Purchasing a new home is an exciting time for many people, and the experts at Port City Paint are here to add to the experience.  One of the questions we are asked frequently is about stain and odor removal.  The motto of  Port City Paint is, “we’ve got you covered”  and in this scenario, we really do.

Removing pesky odors and stains from homes is not an easy task and it’s highly recommended that it is done by a professional painter only.  The only product and procedure that we’ve found throughout the years that mitigates the odors and stains, is a long-term and very successful product which is a shellac pigmented primer that Port City Paint will apply to the walls and ceiling that will then be covered by the homeowner’s choice of paint color.

Here’s how it works:  the shellac based primer creates a seal that is permanent, with long-term efficacy, that locks in the odor or the stain and does not allow it to permeate beyond that seal.  Products like KILZ or even several layers of primer and paint just won’t do the trick long-term, because the odor or stain will just eventually leak it’s way through.  These products will cover for a short time, but eventually will allow for the reemergence of the odor. The shellac, however makes a hard barrier, and it will protect your home from whatever odor lies beneath for much longer.

The initial investment in proper remediation (or odor & stain removal) will be more than just a paint and prime project, but because of it’s long-term effects, this is really the only way to properly cover up the smell or the stain.  Homeowners will have to prepare to be away from the home for a period of time during application because of the potency of this product.  We’ll need proper ventilation to apply the special primer,  but drying time is fast and can be covered by beautiful paint in no time at all.

Recently, we worked with a home-owner through the recommendation of Wanda Berry, a Realtor, to remediate a home in Kure Beach.  Soiled by decades of nicotine, the new home-owners saw the potential in this gorgeous vaulted-ceiling, multi-bedroom home close to the beach.

Within one week this home literally had new life breathed into it - it was a total refresh.  Port City Paint’s team of professionals added the shellac based primer, and covered the gorgeous home with new bright white ceiling paint and bright-beach, summer Sea Salt greenish-blue tone by Sherwin Williams.  The transformation was quick, efficient, and essentially amazing.  It’s a truly spectacular home.
